Cuban Oregano - Indian Borage
Plectranthus Amboinicus
Cuban oregano, also known as Indian borage or Plectranthus amboinicus, is a bold, aromatic herb with thick, fuzzy leaves and a delightful, pungent scent. Despite its name, it’s not a true oregano but belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae). This versatile plant is a staple in tropical gardens and windowsills around the world for its ornamental appeal and culinary + medicinal uses.
Cuban oregano isn’t from Cuba or India — it's native to southern and eastern Africa! Its global nickname game is strong because of its widespread popularity and regional uses.

Tips For Care
Watering
Likes to dry out a bit between waterings. Think "less is more"—overwatering is its kryptonite.
Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light but can handle a bit of direct sun. In cooler climates, a sunny windowsill or sheltered patio is ideal.
Temperature and Humidity
Loves warmth! Protect from frost and bring indoors before temps drop below 10°C (50°F).
Pruning
This plant can be pruned to control its size and shape, as well as to promote bushy growth. Pinch back the tips of new growth to encourage branching, and remove any dead or yellowing leaves.
Jordan's Take
This plant is SO underrated. I love how hardy it is and how fast it grows—it’s a great “starter” for anyone nervous about growing herbs indoors. Plus, the fuzzy, juicy leaves are fun to touch, and the smell is instantly nostalgic. I keep mine near the kitchen so I can snip and cook on the fly!
